Death

Our unit lost a Soldier over the weekend. Rumors say it's a suicide. Oddly enough, I actually did not know her. While it's a small unit, since she joined the unit while I was gone and since I've been back, I've been in such a "special" status... never met her.

Nevertheless, we're all saddenned by the loss.

So sorry to hear this.

Why do they label it suicide? Do women in the armed forces have more emotional difficulty than men? How tragic. This only reinforces my opposition to the war.

They call it a suicide if it is believed that the person who is dead reached that end due to their own actions.

(I did not know this person, but based on the word of mouth, for what it's worth...) She may have been depressed. Many Soldiers become depressed on assignments in Germany and Korea (not so much for England, as they speak English). Soldiers feel isolated, and lonely.

Is that truer with women than men? I don't think so. I'm quite sure men can be just as lonely and isolated as women.

There may have been several contributing factors - but I won't list them here BECAUSE they are rumor and innuendo.

The European edition of the 11 April 2006 Stars and Stripes has a short blurb about her.

As for Peggy's final comment, let me understand, please... your opposition to the war (by the way, is that the Afghanistan War, the Iraq War, the little war fought here and there around the war, or ALL war?) is reinforced by the Soldier's suicide? Are you therefore against firefighters when a fireman commits suicide? How about libraries? Librarians commit suicide.

I'm being facetious because your argument is disjointed. A Soldier (who had not deployed or been to one of the theaters of conflict) commits suicide -- therefore the war is bad.

Could you elaborate?

Sorry to hear about the soldier.

Good rebuttal to commenter Peggy.

Ah, god... that is so sad. My Dad took his own life back when I was 16, and it still hurts, just thinking that things got that desperate for him, and how it affected us.

I'm always so terribly sorry to hear about suicides. Good response to your commenter though, as suicides in the military occur whether there is a war or not.
